DESCRIPTION: EPW - H. Golay & Son, London, WWII era British military aircraft watch with center-seconds, 62mm, chrome-plated base metal OF original case with rotating black painted bezel with inner markings on a scale of 0 to 360, threaded screw on band at 1 operates clamp which allows or prevents rotation of bezel, case rear with British military broad arrow (pheon) marking in addition to HS.4 designation, case as-made with no bow or provision for such, white enamel dial with broad arrow marking between "A W" letters, SW-SS, lever escapement with capped escape wheel, likely 18J, gilt mvt, s#81 within case and to dial. The H.S.4 designation is for a Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm dash-mounted timepiece, and during the early portion of World War II these H. Golay watches were used among Fairey Swordfish biplane torpedo bombers.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, fine cosmetic mvt condition overall, fingerprint type smudge to train bridge, some haze and few fine scratches elsewhere to plate surfaces; dial flawless in visible portion; nearly mint hands; case shows very light wear, profuse fine to micro-fine scratches to rear, some small mars to perimeter of bezel from past opening attempts, bezel with some fine scratches, abrasions, and scattered areas of paint loss; crown shows little wear; good glass crystal.
